The twins were in a rather expensive looking, top floor loft that looked over the New York skyline. They were squawking at each other. They made faces at each other. They were twenty five.
"We make the best adults don't we?" Annabelle said with a chuckle when they had finally stopped.
"Indeed we do," her brother responded. Reagan was sitting on a barstool by the counter, a medium sized, white Scottish Fold cat in a ridiculous red sweater sitting in his lap. It was fusing over the black lanyard that hung off his belt loop, rolling over and chewing on the thing as the cat tried to remove it. Reagan would occasionally grab the nylon strap and dangle it in front of the cat teasingly.
"Alright, so just make sure if you leave to lock up and remember he gets breakfast and dinner and yes you do have to change the litter box." Annabelle chastised as she lifted a black travel bag onto her shoulder.
The twins looked strikingly similar considering they were only fraternal. Annabelle had the same face as her brother only with softer, more feminine features. She had also dyed her hair similarly black and wore similar colored contacts, only hers were teal and blue. Annabelle even matched her brother in height and not surprisingly in temperament.
"How about I just promise to keep the cat alive?" Reagan said with a smirking grin. "Isn't that right Fruits? It's all cheeseburgers and pizza while you're with me!" He said rubbing the feline under its tiny chin.
Annabelle released an exasperated sigh. "Ya, whatever. I guess as long as you don't kill him." With one hand she took hold of the handle of a rolling suitcase and with the other opened the door of the loft. "I'll be back in two weeks. Please try not to burn the house done while I'm gone."
"No promises." He grin was full and toothy. Annabelle pressed her lips into a tight line and narrowed her eyes at her brother, but the goofy expression he returned to her only made her chuckle.
"I'll see you later brother."
"Have a safe trip!" And with that Annabelle was gone and Reagan was alone on the loft.
It was mid afternoon but the New York city sky was blanketed with heavy gray clouds that made it look like early evening. For awhile Reagan sat with Fruits in his lap and stared out at the dismal skyline. He'd been in New York since his parents had sent him away but this was the closest he'd gotten to his old style of living. The apartment, while vast and open, still maintained a rich cozy feeling with bookshelves that went from the floor to the second story ceiling. The couches too added to the homey feeling as they were large and plush with many blankets and throw pillows piled into their corners. The smell of tea and chocolate filled the air. Looking down at Fruits Reagan grinned. "How about we go for a walk buddy?"
Reagan set the cat down on the floor and went to put on proper winter clothing. It had not yet started snowing but the air was crisp and easily bit through his usual cardigans. Digging into the duffel he'd brought up to the apartment he threw on a thick, black cotton jacket over his purple knitted sweater, and on top of the jacket layered over another leather one. He also tossed on a deep purple scarf and knitted black hat. Going into the closet near the door he dug out the cat harness and his winter boots. Fruits came to sit by Reagan as he sat on the floor pulling on his boots. The cat was miniature in comparison to Reagan but happily climbed over the man's legs as he tried to place himself back in his lap. "Hehe hold on buddy, I'm almost done."
Finished with his own clothing Reagan fitted the cat harness under Fruits little red sweater. "Oh wait!" Reagan whispered to the mewing cat as he realized he forgot something. Digging in the bottom of the closet Reagan pulled out a tiny hat that looked like a frog. It was extremely small, too small even for a child. Undoing the velcro Reagan fitted the hat to Fruits tiny head. "There you go buddy! Now you're ready for the fiercest winters!"
Reagan stood up from the floor, carrying Fruits up with him. He rested the cat on one broad shoulder while he zipped up the cotton jacket. He didn't zip the thing up all the way however and removing Fruits from his shoulder he tucked the cat inside the sweater. Over that he zipped the leather jacket, securing the cat snuggly to his chest. Fruits looked up at him, then at the door, then back at him, and mewed. "I know I know, you wanna go." Reagan removed a little green leash from a hook in the closet and digging his hand into his jacket, attached it to the harness, letting the loose end hang over his neck. "Now off we go!"
Reagan rode the elevator down to the first floor and made his way out onto the main street. He was making his way to the park but on his way stopped for a warm drinking to keep his bare hands from going numb. In the Starbucks nearest the apartment people pointed and giggled at the small hatted cat poking out from Reagan's jacket. Quickly Reagan grabbed a how peppermint mocha and made his way towards Central Park. It wasn't a long walk, he was only half way done with his drink when they arrived.
Once amongst the trees bare of leaves Reagan removed Fruits from his jacket. He set the cat on the ground and held onto the end of the leash and watched as the cat oriented himself to the open surroundings. It only took a second before Fruits was padding his way through the trees, trailing a large man behind him. Reagan watched his cat-charge pleasantly, taking enjoyment in watching the feline bounce around and roll on the cold ground with his silly red sweater and stupid funny frog hat. The pace of cat sitting was definitely different from that of hunting, and Reagan found himself surprisingly alright with that.
Standing alone except for Fruits Reagan began to wonder what his new found friends were up to. He guessed most likely hunting. He'd been called away from his own mission by his sister who had needed him to cat sit. Typically it took more than an animal to call him away from a chase but it was Annabelle and Fruits and for them he would leave anything. Walking quickly after Fruits he started to hum to himself and smile as he found him self pleasantly pleased.
